Woman, 18, 'throws newborn baby to their death from hotel window' on holiday

A baby has died in Paris after an 18-year-old understood to be the mother threw the infant from a hotel window.

Witnesses reported the grim incident at around 6am this morning outside the Ibis-style hotel on rue des Réglises in the city's 20th arrondissement. It is thought the young woman threw the child from the hotel room she was staying in, which was located on the second floor.

Screams were heard by witnesses who quickly alerted authorities, leading to emergency responders dashing to the scene. The baby was rushed to hospital in the 19th arrondissement, but sadly the child succumbed to the injuries and passed away, according to Le Parisien.

The alleged mother, on a study trip with fellow US students, was also taken to the hospital. Witnesses claim the baby was thrown from the window "with the umbilical cord" still attached.

The Paris public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the "homicide of a minor under 15", with a magistrate and officers from the minor protection brigade (BPM) of the Paris judicial police attending the scene, a police source revealed, reports the Mirror.

The young woman, described by prosecutors as "part of a group of young adults travelling in Europe", was whisked away to the hospital for surgery after recently delivering a baby. The Paris prosecutor's office noted: "She was also taken into custody on site. The possibility of a denial of pregnancy is being considered."

It added: "the investigation is underway and the precise circumstances of this tragedy remain to be established... We do not yet know if we are dealing with a denial of pregnancy."
