WhatsApp users across the UK were left frustrated this afternoon as the messaging app unexpectedly crashed, preventing thousands from sending messages. Reports of outages began surfacing around 3:10pm on February 28, 2023, with users flocking to social media to confirm the issue.
An hour later at 4:08pm, the app appeared to be back up running as users received a backlog of messages. According to Down Detector, over 21,000 complaints were logged, with 59% of users struggling to send messages, 22% experiencing server connection issues, and 19% reporting problems with the app itself.
The outage appeared to be widespread, affecting both mobile and desktop versions of the platform.
As expected, many users turned to X (formerly Twitter) to check if others were experiencing the same problem. One user wrote: "Me running to Twitter after rebooting my phone to see if WhatsApp is down."
Another joked: "Stop toggling your Airplane mode on/off. Stop refreshing your WhatsApp. It’s not your network, WhatsApp is down."
WhatsApp’s parent company did not issue an official statement on the cause of the outage.
