Arsenal's hopes of a trophy this season took a seismic blow on Wednesday evening.
The Gunners, who were riding high after their five-star performance against Manchester City, were promptly shot-down by Eddie Howe's side. Newcastle looked Wembley bound from the opening minute as they cut through the Gunners defence with apparent ease.
Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon were the difference makers, and Arsenal's biggest hope of silverware now rests on them pegging back Liverpool in the Premier League.
Daily Star Sport has a look at what Mikel Arteta got wrong during a drab evening on the Toon.
Arsenal's defence has been the foundation of their recent wealth of success - however, there was an uncharacteristic showing from William Saliba on Wednesday evening.
Saliba was nervous from the outset, and that quickly spread across the backline as Newcastle forwards pounced on mistake after mistake that the Gunners never normally make.
"William Saliba hall of shame performance," one fan sighed. And another added: "William Saliba Is having a Loris Karius type of performance..."
It was huge call from Mikel Arteta, last month, not to dip his toes into the transfer market and sign a striker - especially after Gabriel Jesus' season was cut short following a horror injury against Manchester United.
And it was evident against the Magpies - Arsenal's attack just didn't have a focal point.
"Arteta and the board only have themselves to blame not doing anything in the transfer window and especially not buying a striker," one fumed. As another added: "Arteta/Board deserve this for sitting and twiddling their thumbs!"
Arsenal needed four goals in 40 minutes; Arteta looked to his bench and called for Raheem Sterling.
Sterling hasn't been the best of signings in north London, and he's looked shot of confidence in recent weeks. It just wasn't the moment to look to Sterling and trust him to try and bring you back into the game.
"Arteta has given up. And Sterling is the towel he threw in," one fan fumed. While a second shared: "We need five goals and Mikel Arteta brings on Raheem Sterling..."
You can almost forgive Arsenal for having something of a Manchester City-hangover. The Gunners ran Pep Guardiola's side ragged in the second half.
However, they were slow to start on Wednesday evening - almost still celebrating their win over City. You can't do that in a cup semi-final, Newcastle were 100 per cent laser focused on the tie and Arsenal were not.
"Is the loss today by Arsenal, simply just a hangover from their big win over Man City this past weekend," one fan pondered. As another responded: "So nice to see Arsenal humbled after thinking beating City was some sort of massive achievement..."
