Viewers slam ABC for their 'woke' 9pm Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks

Sydney's 9pm New Year's Eve fireworks display has received mixed reviews, with some viewers slamming the ABC and the City of Sydney for its 'woke' theme.

After the display, which was curated by Indigenous artist Blak Douglas, rap duo Barkaa and Dobby performed their 2020 song I Can't Breathe - which references the 438 Indigenous people who died in police custody.

'Where has the family-friendly theme gone? Why has it become political? The kids wanted to hear some good music before bed, how disappointing,' one viewer wrote on Twitter.

Another agreed, saying: 'Haven't kids been through enough seriousness this year?

'@ABCTV kids early NYE was good until they were forced to watch three minutes of history before they were allowed to watch the most depressing and dark KIDS fireworks ever. Leave it between the adults.'

However it wasn't all negative online with some praising the 9pm fireworks.

'Loving the First Nations focus of the 9pm fireworks and entertainment curated by Blak Douglas,' one wrote.

Another said: 'Is this the biggest 9pm display of fireworks ever at #SydNYE?' alongside the hashtag 'Absolutely Awesome'.

When introducing the 9pm fireworks, Douglas said while referring to the Sydney Harbour Bridge: 'We are taking over one of the most famous icons on the planet. An icon that was never consulted amongst either the Gadigal or Cammeray people.'

The display focused on the First Nations cultures followed by those from the Torres Strait Islands.

Music for the fireworks display was an Indigenous-themed soundtrack.

Rap duo Barkaa and Dobby followed with their performance, where they donned 'Black Lives Matter' T-shirts.
