Three 'huge' explosions wake people up and 'rattle houses' in UK city

Sheffield has been rocked by a series of 'huge' explosions that have rattled homes and woken up residents.

One scared person wrote: "What the hell were those huge explosions in #Sheffield just now?" while another added: "Bloody sonic boom or something over north Sheffield about 10 minutes ago… house was rattling #sonicboom".

The 'booms' however are thought to have been a building being demolished nearby. Footage on Facebook shows four massive smokestacks being demolishied, a series of explosions ringing out before they slowly kiltering over into a cloud of dust below. The Daily Star has spoken to a man who filmed the demolition this morning and told us it took place on Claywheels Lane.

Another person reported: "Just been a series of huge explosions rocking Sheffield."

One person asked, "What the hell were those huge explosions in #Sheffield just now?" before another responded: "I’m wondering same" before saying they hear three booms in the Hillsborough area.

People in other parts of the city claim to have hear it too, with reports of people in Oughtibridge, Wisewood and Walkley all saying they heard it.

The blast is thought to have been casued by the destuction of chimneys in the north west of the city.

In a post on Facebook, community platform Sheffield online said: "Sheffield residents were left shaken this morning after a series of loud explosions echoed across the city at 8:00 AM. Many took to social media, worried about what had caused the noise – but it turns out, it was all part of a planned demolition.

"The explosions were caused by the demolition of four chimneys and a tower-like structure on Clay Wheels Lane, located between Wadsley Bridge and Middlewood. The structures were brought down in a controlled series of detonations, with each explosion happening within seconds of the last."

Some people have already raised claims that locals weren't communicated with clearly ahead of the incident.

A spokesperson from South Yorkshire Police later said: "This was a controlled explosion to demolish chimneys at Clay Wheels Lane, Sheffield. The demolition took place around 8am today (Sunday 2 March). Officers were not involved."
