WHEN it comes to washing white clothes, many of us find ourselves trying every trick in the book to get rid of stains.
This is especially true for socks - there’s no better feeling than slipping on a fresh, white pair.
But don’t worry, there are plenty of hacks to tackle those stubborn stains.
Cleaning expert Jahid Hasan from Hamlet Laundry has shared his top tip for banishing the dingy colours from your socks.
And the best part? You don’t need to splurge on expensive products, as the secret ingredient is simple lemon juice.
Jahid explained: “Let’s face it, we’ve all been seduced by those bright bottles with impossible promises.
“But here’s the thing: most of them can’t do anything that lemon juice can’t do, and better.”
Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent that helps brighten fabrics and lift stains, all while being gentle on your clothes.
The citric acid in lemons works wonders as a natural bleach and has antibacterial properties to help disinfect your laundry.
He continued: “Lemon juice isn’t just for your tea - it’s a natural bleach that can make your whites even whiter.
“The citric acid in lemon juice works as a gentle bleaching agent, helping to lift stains and brighten fabrics without the harshness of traditional chemical bleaches.”
To get those whites looking brighter, Jahid recommends pouring 120ml of lemon juice directly into the drum or detergent drawer of your washing machine.
For tougher stains, apply the lemon juice directly to the affected area and sprinkle a pinch of salt on the socks.
Let the mixture sit for at least 30 minutes before washing as usual.
Finally, add your regular laundry detergent, run a hot wash, and dry your whites in a tumble dryer or out in the sunlight for a natural lift.
A packet of lemons typically cost 89p for a pack of five from Sainsbury's.

It came after cleaning fan Calum took to TikTok to share his clever hack, as he wielded a cleaning cloth and a bottle of Febreze fabric freshener spray.
He said: "A little tip if you're doing your washing and you've got a tumble dryer.
"Grab a microfiber cloth and fabric freshener, spray the microfiber cloth and then put the microfiber cloth in with your wet washing."
Once your clothes are dry, they'll "smell beautiful".
Calum captioned his video: "Who needs dryer sheets when you have microfibre cloths?"
