Following the interview between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and David Remnick, the staff writer Evan Osnos provides a more candid assessment of the foreign-policy challenges of the past four years, which he based on his extensive reporting on the Biden Administration. Biden’s long knowledge of Benjamin Netanyahu, Osnos thinks, led him to greatly overestimate his influence on the Israeli leader. Osnos also reported for years from China, and notes the contrast between Biden’s and President-elect Donald Trump’s approaches to the Taiwan conflict. Although Biden claimed that the U.S. would put soldiers on the ground to defend Taiwan, Trump in the past has signalled disengagement. But, for a cautious Xi Jinping, invading the island nation would be a severe risk nonetheless.
