The Handmaid’s Tale will release its sixth and final season in April. The final chapter follows Elisabeth Moss‘ June Osborne pursuit to freedom, a Wednesday teaser forecasts, as she and her fellow handmaids ignite a rebellion.
“They believed that these garments that they put on our bodies told the world who we are,” Moss’ character June says, before garments are soaked in a red dye. “To mark us, they put us in red — the color of blood. They forgot that it’s also the color of rage. The dress became our uniform, and we became an army.”
In the sixth season of the Hulu series, June leads the push to take down Gilead, a dystopian America, with help from Luke, played by O-T Fagbenle, and Moira, played by Samira Wiley. As Serena, played by Yvonne Strahovski, tries to reform Gilead, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) reckon with their past. Meanwhile, Nick (Max Minghella) faces challenging tests to his character.
Released in 2017 and adapted from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, The Handmaid’s Tale‘s first season looked at a nation ruled by a dictatorship that placed fertile women in captivity and forced them to bear children for the ruling class. The series, which arrived the year Donald Trump began his first term as president, shed light on the nation’s own lack of mandated maternity leave and limitations to birth control and abortions. Moss told Rolling Stone in April 2017 that the book’s reversal of women’s sovereignty and bodily autonomy drew her to the role.
“You take everything away from her, as a woman and as a human being, and she ends up using her femininity and her womanhood, the very things that enslaved her, to survive,” Moss said.
Other cast members in the dystopian drama series include Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, Sam Jaeger, Ever Carradine, and Josh Charles. The first three episodes of Season Six air April 8, followed by weekly episodes.
