SAN DIEGO — Frankie Laine, 71, a top recording star of the 1940s and 1950s whose 21 gold records include “Mule Train” and “Rawhide,” suffered a spasm of severe chest pains and has been hospitalized for observation and testing, officials said today.

Laine was admitted Wednesday to Mercy Hospital after being stricken at his seaside home on San Diego’s Point Loma Peninsula. Laine’s wife, Nan, said the singer has experienced some minor heart problems in recent years. “Don’t make it sound bad. He just walked down the stairs to the car for the trip to the hospital,” she said.
