A second sinkhole has opened up on a street residents were evacuated from on Tuesday following the appearance of another massive crater. A cordon has been erected on Godstone High Street in Surrey as the road has been closed between Oxted Road and Bletchingley Road.
On Tuesday homes were evacuated and water in the area was turned off following the partial collapse of a road. It is thought that the first hole is around 19m long and three metres wide, with SES Water confirming that a burst water main pipe caused the hole.
The second sinkhole appears to be around 3 metres wide and 4 metres long. It appeared today (Wednesday), just a couple of metres from the other hole on the other side of the road.
Images show the new hole has collapsed the entire pavement and eaten into someone's back garden – almost swallowing some garden furniture. There is a pool of water in the hole.
An SES Water spokesperson said on Tuesday: "Customers within RH1 and RH9 are currently experiencing water supply issues, due to a burst main on Godstone High Street. We are working at pace with key partners including UK Power Networks, SGN, and emergency services to ensure we can safely repair the main as soon as possible.
"Road users should avoid travelling near Godstone High Street - a signed diversion route is in place. Customers on our Priority Service Register will be delivered bottled water by our teams this morning. Please continue to check our website for further updates. If you have an emergency, please call us on 01737 720000."
A local resident said on Tuesday: "All the local shops are out of water in the area. So we need some information about what’s going to happen with water supplies."
And another said, in an angry social media post: "I hope you are aiming to set up water stations very soon... This is a joke. We have vulnerable people in the community. The local shops are running out. WHERE IS OUR WATER?"
