Saturday Night Live praised after recreating heated Trump and Zelensky clash

Saturday Night Live tackled the biggest news story of the week in its latest spoof.

The show recreated the shocking exchange between US President Donald Trump and Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House last week. The comedy show opened with a spoof of the now infamous Oval Office clash, which included a surprise appearance by Austin Powers star Mike Myers.

The cold open sketch, which has already had close to 5million views on YouTube, begins: "Yesterday, President Trump hosted Ukranian President Zelensky at the White House and it went really, really well. Everyone who watched felt at ease and thought 'The world is now a safer place'".

It then cuts to Mikey Day, who played Zelensky and SNL Trump impersonator James Austin Johnson as the US President, inside the White House, with the latter welcoming his counterpart to "this incredible trap, it's going to be a big beautiful trap". Comedian and actor Mike Myers, whose last film role came in the 2022 film Amsterdam, was enlisted to play DOGE head Elon Musk, arriving at the meeting in a 'tech support' t-shirt and brandishing a chainsaw.

Many fans took to the comments thanking the show for its support. One person wrote: "As a Ukrainian, I want to say a huge thank you for not standing beside this and sharing the truth in comedy. It was both sad and funny to watch. I want to say thank you to all Americans who support us in this difficult time. This means the world to us. We see it, and we appreciate it."

Another fan commented on the casting of Mike as tech boss Elon, saying: "Bro…Mike Myers’s as Elon was the absolute best choice for the role and I never would guessed it Definitely one of my favourite skits!"

The real meeting between the two leaders and Vice-President JD Vance became the biggest news headline of the week after it descended into a virtual shouting match. Trump accused his Ukrainian counterpart of "gambling with World War III" and claimed he was being "disrespectful" for pushing for security guarantees.

Zelensky flew to the UK following his US visit, and received a hero's welcome prior to meeting with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. He then flew via helicopter from near Buckingham Palace to Sandringham to meet King Charles, still dressed in his trademark military-style black sweatshirt, adorned with the Ukrainian trident.

A royal source told the Mirror: "The Ukrainian President was warmly received and the meeting lasted just under an hour. Prior to his visit to the UK, Mr Zelenskyy asked for the meeting with His Majesty and the government agreed for it to go ahead."
