Ruben Amorim shows true colours with Marcus Rashford call ahead of Liverpool tie

Marcus Rashford has not been named in Manchester United's squad to face Liverpool.

The United forward, who wants to leave the club, was confirmed earlier this week to have missed training due to illness, with Ruben Amorim stating he would be unable to feature against Liverpool this weekend. The 27-year-old had returned to the bench in United's last game against Newcastle United, which they lost 2-0 to the Magpies at Old Trafford.

However, Rashford did not come on off the bench, with Amorim's decision to bring on Antony in the second half instead of the former a telling decision. "At the moment he [Rashford] is ill," said Amorim at his pre-match press conference. He is not training. He is going to be out this week."

14th place United take on Arne Slot's table topping Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, with the Reds able to move eight points clear of second place Arsenal with a win. Meanwhile, United find themselves battling to save their season, having lost their last three Premier League games to Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle.

And it looks as though they will do so without Rashford, who has stated he is interested in pursuing a new challenge away from Old Trafford. United are open to selling Rashford, however it remains to be seen just who will sign the England international.

Links to Saudi Arabia have been rubbished by Rashford, who inked a new deal back in 2023 with United worth a reported £315,000-per-week. With the United forwards deal running through till 2028, it is unlikely any club would want to take on Rashford's bumper wages in full.

That means they will have to take on a sizeable chunk of paying his wages if they want to get rid of Rashford in January. Due to those wages, it seems highly unlikely United will be able to find a club actively willing to fork out a big transfer fee on Rashford, whose career at Old Trafford now looks to be over.
