Off-the-field turbulence and meek performances on it have come to define United’s 2024-25 campaign with the club hopelessly marooned in the bottom half of the table with hopes of European qualification in the league long extinguished.

Ruben Amorim’s side are still fighting in the Europa League and are in the fifth round of the FA Cup after limping past Leicester City earlier this month but the lifeless displays this season have undermined any small progress made.

Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte bailed United out last Saturday after a miserable first-half performance against Everton with Keane slamming his former side for treating the draw ‘like they won the cup’.

While United showed some fight on Wednesday night to see off Ipswich Town after being reduced to 10 men, recent showings have infuriated their former captain.

In the latest episode of The Overlap, recorded before Wednesday’s win over Ipswich, Keane took aim at United skipper Fernandes, insisting ‘talent is not enough’ and accusing others of ‘pretending to close players down’.

With Wright arguing Fernandes is the only player capable of ‘saving’ United, Keane took aim at the Portugal international, insisting he is ‘not a fighter’.

Keane compared Fernandes to legendary Arsenal captain and Wright’s former teammate Tony Adams, accusing Fernandes of lacking the traits needed to be a leader in the dressing room.’

Wednesday’s win over Ipswich saw United climb back into 14th place but more importantly, open up a 16 point gap between themselves and the bottom to three to ease any lingering relegation concerns.

United return to action against Fulham in the FA Cup on Sunday.
