Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a concussion during Tottenham Hotspur’s Carabao Cup fixture against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Bentancur went down in the eighth minute of Spurs’ semi-final first leg game against Liverpool when he attempted to attack a corner kick. The Uruguayan stooped for a header but failed to make contact with the ball, ending up face down on the turf.
His Tottenham team-mates were quickly on the scene and the midfielder received oxygen as he was treated on the pitch for around ten minutes before he was stretchered off. Spurs later confirmed that Bentancur was conscious and was taken to hospital for further checks.
Speaking to club media on Friday, Postecoglou gave an update on the 27-year-old’s condition. “Good news, thankfully. He was in the hospital, obviously, and did all the tests in terms of just checking, making sure that everything was okay. He's back home, and he's fine,” the Spurs boss said.
"He's feeling good. We will obviously follow the protocols now. I think it's, a couple of weeks where you just got to make sure that everything's okay. But, thankfully, it looks like a concussion, but nothing more than that.
He added: “It was distressing, you saw especially Pedro [Porro], he was the first one there, and, knew it was a distressing situation. I thought the lads handled it well, and our medical team handled it well, and, as I say, thankfully, all good.”
Bentancur posted a picture on Instagram from his hospital bed on Thursday, assuring fans he was fine and thanking them for their message of support. “All good, guys! Thank you for the messages!!! Congratulations for the victory boys!!!”
Thankfully, Bentancur’s injury is less worrying than first fears suggested. Footage of Bentancur before the corner came in showed his jaw drooping, alarming fans that he made have suffered a stroke.
The timeline for his return is unknown, and while Postecoglou and Spurs won’t want to rush him back, he is another name added to their growing injury absentees. The Lilywhites face National League side Tamworth on Sunday before taking on Arsenal in the North London Derby on Wednesday.
