Richard Madden relaxes on the beach with his mother Pat in Mexico

Richard Madden prepared to ring in 2022 in style on Wednesday, as he headed to the beach for a spot of sunbathing during a luxurious getaway to Tulum, Mexico.

The Eternals star, 35, was joined by his beloved mum Pat as he reclined on a sunbed on the sand to top up his tan.

Richard displayed his shirtless physique in tight black swimming trunks as he left his swanky resort to relax on the sunny break.

After a busy year promoting his role in the Marvel blockbuster Eternals, Richard enjoyed some much-needed downtime on the beach with Pat.

The star sported simple black swimming trunks as he chatted to his mother before laying down on his sunbed.

Meanwhile Pat sported a simple pink swimsuit as she enjoyed the sunny break with her son.

Ahead of his sunny break, Richard had been filming the Amazon Prime Video spy series Citadel in London with Priyanka Chopra.

According to Deadline, the series follows a lead operative of Citadel's rival intelligence agency Laszlo Milla [Roland Møller] after he is released from Citadel's detention facility.

Upon his release, Laszlo is determined to get revenge on the man responsible for his capture, Mason Kane, and bring down Citadel for good.

Richard is set to star in the series and, while his character is yet to be confirmed, is expected to take on the role of special agent Mason.

Citadel, which also stars Stanley Tucci, is described as an 'action-packed spy series with a compelling emotional centre'.

The series is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers behind several hit Marvel films, including Avengers: Endgame, and will feature a number of spin-off productions.

While plot details remain scarce, it's known the show will include several productions in countries like Italy, India and Mexico for the spin offs.

The show is said to be an action-packed spy series which will be anchored by the U.S.-based show that will then branch out to several local productions set in different areas all over the world.

When Amazon announced the ambitious project in July 2018, the studio stated, 'All of the local series are meant to enhance the entire entertainment experience and will be available for the viewer to deep dive into an imagined layered world.'
