PSG boss compares Liverpool to Ligue 1 team ahead of Champions League clash

PSG boss Luis Enrique claims Liverpool and Lille "have similar things" as he used Saturday's 4-1 win over them as preparation.

The two European heavyweights will clash in the last 16 of the Champions League in a matter of days with the Premier League leaders heading to the French capital. Liverpool topped the league phase whilst the Parisians struggled through, having to overcome Brest in the play-off phase.

Lille also remain in the Champions League, losing just twice in the league phase, and gave the Reds a run for their money when they played each other. Harvey Elliott's goal secured a 2-1 win, but they were given a stern test by the French side.

In Ligue 1 Lille sit fifth having won 11 and lost five of their games thus far. They're 21 points off PSG, who sit top, whilst Liverpool themselves are clear in England, leading Arsenal by 13 points, but Enrique sees style similarities between them and Lille.

He said: "We're not going to change much, today was a test, Liverpool and Lille have similar things, we put them under such pressure that they could no longer play from the back, they had to play long.

"It will be different, it will be very complicated of course, but we are in the best period of the season. We will play against the best team in Europe, qualified brilliantly, but it is not in our mentality to speculate, protect ourselves, stay defensive, we will attack and we will try to turn that in our favour.”

"I know Liverpool very well, without a doubt they are the team in the best form in Europe both in terms of results and play. It could have been a Champions League final, we're going to try to do it with our weapons.”

PSG are into their first season post-Kylian Mbappe, who has hit his straps with Real Madrid, but the French side have begun to find form. Ousmane Dembele is their leading goalscorer, notching 26 times, with the likes of Fabian Ruiz and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia helping to keep their attack ticking.

Liverpool have hopes of landing a treble with the Premier League and the Carabao Cup also on their radar and, despite the firepower in Paris, Arne Slot doesn't fear the French side, who themselves crave European success.

“Do we fear PSG? We don’t fear anybody," he said. "But I am impressed by their quality, they are on an upwards curve a bit similar to ours at the moment.”
