Prince William's emotional statement over terror death of his ex-nanny's stepson

Prince William has expressed his condolences over the death of Edward Pettifer, his former nanny's stepson who was killed in the New Orleans terror attack.

Edward was among the 14 people killed when a pick-up truck donning an ISIS flag mowed down new year revelers in the early hours. The Prince of Wales and Kate said they were "shocked and saddened" by the 31-year-old's death.

Edward's stepmum, Alexandra Pettifer, was employed as a nanny for young Prince William and Prince Harry in the 1990s, when she was known as Tiggy Legge-Bourke.

Prince William's statement read: "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Pettifer family and all those innocent people who have been tragically impacted by this horrific attack."

Edward was visiting Louisiana with a friend when the tragedy struck. His cause of death has been confirmed as "blunt force injuries". His friend also died in the attack.

The vehicle hit many people before driver Shamsud-Din Jabbar,42, a US army veteran, opened fire. At least 14 people are confirmed dead with dozens left injured. Police shot and killed Jabbar at the scene.

Edward's grieving relatives paid tribute to their "wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and a friend to many".

In a statement, they added that they "devastated at the tragic news of Ed's death in New Orleans".

It continued: "We will all miss him terribly. Our thoughts are with the other families who have lost their family members due to this terrible attack.

"We request that we can grieve the loss of Ed as a family in private. Thank you."

It's understood Prince William remained in contact with Alexandra remained in contact to this day, long after she stopped nannying in 1999.

It's also understood Alexandra played a significant role in the two royal boys' lives after the death of their mother, Princess Diana, in 1997, and that the former nanny is godmother to Harry and Meghan's son, Archie.
