Pan American World Airways said it had chosen Pratt & Whitney and International Aero Engines, a consortium of foreign companies in which Pratt & Whitney has a 30% interest, to build the engines for 28 Airbus Industrie jetliners that Pan Am ordered last year. The engine order will mean $269 million for Pratt & Whitney, a unit of Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies. Definitive contracts depend on Pan Am’s reaching a new agreement with its five unions.
