Oscars fans baffled after discovering Margaret Qualley's very famous mum

With the Oscars taking place tonight, actress Margaret Qualley has made headlines for a supposed snub made by the academy towards the The Substance star, leading fans to discover the actress has an incredibly famous mother.

Making her acting debut in 2013's Palo Alto, starring Emma Roberts, Qualley's success did not skyrocket till 2021 after the Netflix show Maid became a top-ten favourite. The miniseries followed a young Alex (played by Margaret) as she struggled with the complexities of leaving an abusive relationship, navigating homelessness and finding work as a single mother.

Nominated for three Emmy's and Golden Globes each, Margaret became a top pick for producers - having a killer year in 2024 as she was cast for Kinds of Kindness, Drive-Away Dolls, and The Substance.

Qualley's broad range of acting skills, all within a year, has brought the actress a wave of attention from the public and press alike where many fans have only just realised that the actress was made for Hollywood, not only because of her stellar performances but her very famous family as well.

The Maid was praised for its portrayal of domestic violence and experiencing bipolar disorder - the latter of which was diagnosed to character Alex's mother, Paula. Surprisingly, the actresses are actually mother and daughter in real life.

Qualley's parents are actress Andie MacDowell and former model-turned-rancher Paul Qualley. The pair met on modelling job for high street brand Gap and were married in 1986, having a total of three children - daughter Rainey Qualley also being an actress too! Andie is best known for her roles in classics Four Weddings and a Funeral and Groundhog Day.

In 2023, the youngest of the three, Margaret, told the The Evening Standard that her mother was "probably the only Hollywood actress" in hometown Asheville". Describing her 'normal' life, the 30 year old said she grew up thinking "Well, it’s just normal to me, she’s my mom, so it’s my normal life," but also knew "it was weird". Calling herself lucky, she said "It was a strange thing but [she] did go to a normal school, [had] normal friends, and had a somewhat normal life. Then my mom would go off and do movies and sometimes I’d go with her and sometimes I’d meet, like, Gérard Depardieu".

To Harper's Bazaar that same year, Qualley candidly talked about her how she viewed her Hollywood mother's career. She said: "I understood enough to be proud of her. At the same time, I didn’t love the whole movie thing when I was a kid. My mom going off to do a movie just meant she’s going to leave town and go kiss some other dude and have a pretend life that I’m not involved in". Qualley's older sister, Rainey is not only an actress also, but a singer who goes under the pseudonym Rainsford - the genes for stardom running true.

The Substance star has also made news in the last month for supposedly being 'snubbed' by the Oscars academy as many believed her performance worthy of a nomination. Since they were declared in January, fans and film fanatics have been left wondering why Margaret has been left out of the Best Supporting Actress category, despite her co-star being recognised.

Demi Moore, the lead in the 2024 body horror, has made it back to awards ceremony as a nominee for Best Actress. Alongside British actress Cynthia Erivo for her lead role as Elphaba in Wicked; Karla Sofía Gascón in Emilia Pérez; Mikey Madison from Anora; and Fernanda Torres in I'm Still Here, Demi will be preparing for her possible win on Sunday night (UK 12 AM).

The ceremony is bound to stir up more rumours as the film has received five nominations in total, therefore meaning the cast will be in attendance. Demi Moore's nod from the Oscars is especially confusing when the context of her role is considered - Demi's and Margaret's characters being two halves of a whole. It is also worth reminding that when Moore won her Golden Globe, she mentioned Qualley in her acceptance, saying the actress was "the other half of me that [she] couldn’t have done without".
