The acting duo’s relationship had been tumultuous over the decades, with Tatum, 61, and Ryan going through large periods of estrangement.
The Little Darlings actor was left out of her father’s will when he died of congestive heart failure in 2023 aged 82.
When asked about being cut from his will, Tatum had a blunt response to the tense situation with her late father.
‘Keep it motherf****r,’ she said in an interview with Variety, opening up on what she believes the contributing factors were to their relationship breaking down.
Her son Kevin McEnroe, who Tatum shares with ex-husband John McEnroe, described his grandfather’s inheritance as ‘blood money’ and that his mother is ‘letting go of how much space he took up in her life.’
The star said she believes her first memoir, A Paper Life, caused friction between the pair after she spoke about Ryan’s violent outbursts and her experience of sexual abuse by one of his associates.
‘He was controlling, and telling me, “No, you’re not good,”‘ she said of her father. ‘And so then I started to get not good, feeling scared all the time.’
Tatum continued: ‘The first book that I wrote was just a f***ing honest book. And that’s what got him.’
She also went on to say that her father openly took drugs such as cocaine in front of her.
Tatum is the eldest child of Ryan and Joanna Moore, who divorced in 1967. The former couple also shared son Griffin, 60.
Ryan also went on to welcome Patrick O’Neal, 57, with his second wife and Peyton Place co-star Leigh Taylor-Young, and Redmond James Fawcett O’Neal, 40, with on-off partner Farrah Fawcett.
The actress previously said her Oscar win for Paper Moon caused a rift between her and Ryan.
After the pair starred in the critically acclaimed movie Paper Moon together, Tatum became the youngest person to win a competitive Oscar at the age of 10.
What should have been a happy moment for her and her family, however, was tainted as she claimed her father ‘hated’ that she won the accolade.
‘He loved me, but then hated me because I won the Academy Award,’ she explained to The Hollywood Reporter.
‘Weird s**t happened. It kind of went in the wrong direction to happiness.’
Tatum told Variety that she saw her father before he died and that he offered his daughter drugs, despite her being in recovery for substance addiction herself.
‘I know he was drinking, smoking a lot of pot, and he was like, “Here, take a pill,”‘ she continued.
‘I was like, “No, thank you.”‘ But her son said that she did drink that day, adding: ‘Every single time she’s seen her dad my entire life, something happens.’
In 2020, Tatum ‘overdosed on a combination of pain medication, opiates, and morphine’ which caused a severe stroke.
‘With the addition of morphine and heavier pharmaceuticals, it was getting scary. Covid, chronic pain, all these things led to a place of isolation. In that place, I don’t think, for her, there was much hope,’ Kevin told People in 2023.
Kevin and his siblings, Sean, 35, and Emily, 32, feared their mum would never walk or speak again if she did live.
Tatum went on to say she has now ’embraced’ this current attempt at recovery.
