The awe-inspiring medical docuseries returns in a new location – this time in Scotland. And Edinburgh has a long history in this field of medicine, with the city’s Royal College of Surgeons dating back to the 1500s. Cameras are based in NHS Lothian’s Royal Infirmary, where the first patient to come under the scalpel is 21-year-old Sania, whose acute pancreatitis means that she has been living in pain for 10 years. The operation will remove her pancreas and extract insulin and hormone-producing cells called islets, and transplanting them into her liver. Meanwhile, consultant urological surgeon Alex Laird operateson a patient with kidney cancer.

The last of the heats finds the final eight contestants (including a teacher from Northern Ireland and a carpenter from Norwich) setting up their easels overlooking Bristol’s attractive Harbourside – a busy scene that judge Tai-Shan Schierenberg calls “an intellectual puzzle to solve.” Matters are not helped by the wet and windy weather. “We may need to set up a helpline,” jests Stephen Mangan. “From the pub” adds Schierenberg.

There’s a good lesson in this week’s visit to “SoHa” for any parents who might be tempted to become too involved in their teenage offsprings’ fledgling love lives – Anne (Philippa Dunne) virtually welcoming Amanda’s daughter Georgie into her extended family in Ireland after a couple of dates with Darius. Naturally, it doesn’t end well. Amanda’s love life is on the up, however, when she goes on a date with a wealthy South African admirer, who’s played by comedian Peter Serafinowicz.
9pm, ITV1
In the final visit for now to the 50s murder hotspot, Geordie and Larry are called out to investigate the mysterious death of a reclusive man on the streets of Cambridge. Meanwhile, with Daniel’s whereabouts remaining unknown, Leonard (Al Weaver) receives a letter from the missing man that only serves to increase his concern.

In the last in the current series of his new Grand Designs hybrid, the architect meets Daniel, Laura and their son Archie, who have relocated to the Essex island of Mersea, where Laura and all her family grew up. She wants little Archie to enjoy a childhood like the idyllic one she enjoyed there. They’ve bought what is little more than an old, drafty, cramped beach house just a stone’s throw from the seaside, which they intend to transform into a modern, sustainable family home, on a budget of, apparently, just £50,000.
9pm, Channel 5
A new series exploring the dark world of the online predators investigated by the National Crime Agency. In this opening edition, NCA investigators arrest respected Cambridge graduate and university lecturer, Matthew Falder, who has downloaded nearly 14,000 indecent images of children and 1,251 videos of children from around the world. The programme coincides with a new series on BBC Three called Hunting The Online Sex Predators (also at 9pm), in which journalist James Blake also joins NCA investigators and learns how it’s easier to get a clip removed for copyrighted music than it is to get child abuse content taken down.
