Olympic skier who suffered 'frozen penis' and the 'unbearable' aftermath

Olympic skier Remi Lindholm lifted the lid on the "unbearable" pain he was forced to contend with after suffering a frozen penis for the second time.

The Finnish athlete represented his country at the 2022 Winter Olympics as he competed in the Men's 50km Cross-Country Skiing event in Beijing. The race was shortened to 30km due to the brutal winds which the 27-year-old had major issues with, as the viewing public would find out after the race.

The event - which was ultimately won by Russian star Alexander Bolshunov - saw Lindholm finish in a lowly 28th, but he probably had his mind on other things after admitting he'd suffered from the grim affliction of a frozen penis during the race, which was initially claimed by Finnish outlet IL.

In what is known to be among the most physically demanding winter events, top skiers can burn in excess of 1,000 calories in an hour, according to research. On top of spending almost one hour and 16 minutes on the course in ice-cold temperatures of -17C, Lindholm had just a tad more to deal than his fellow competitors.

Following reports on the state of his appendage post-race, he said to media of his frozen penis: "You can probably guess what was on the ice when I got to the finish line. It was one of the worst competitions I've been in. It was just about battling through. When the body parts started to warm up after the finish, the pain was unbearable."

Lindholm was given a heat bag to apply to his penis in an aid to thaw it out. It was the second time the skier had suffered with the issue, enduring the unforgiving pain during the Ruka World Cup the year before. However, the Finn admitted: "It was [worse this time]. Pretty unbearable pain."

A frozen penis on the slopes isn't an uncommon experience, with Calle Halfvarsson suffering the same fate as Lindholm during the 20km World Cup event in Ruka. The Swede was left worried about his chances to have children if he endures it again.

"I have frozen my penis," he told Swedish publication Expressen. "For real. Damn, I had to lie in there [warm-up tent] for 10 minutes to warm it up. It hurts so damn much. It's terrible. It's lucky that I'm going to have my second child because this is going to be difficult in the future if I'm going to continue like this."

With the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy set to commence on February 6, it remains to be seen whether Lindholm - who finished second in the Finlandia Ski Marathon Freestyle last weekend - will compete next year. Halfvarsson. meanwhile, has earmarked the Olympics as a goal to make before aiming to retire in 2027 at the World Championships.
