Locals in Newsom, a village one mile south of the city, reported hearing the noise, as did people in Marsden 28 miles southeast.
The noise was heard as far as West Vale more than 32 miles northwest of Huddersfield.
Some locals suggested that the cause of the boom, which has not been officially revealed, was an electrical pylon or a junction box.
Northern Powergrid told Metro that ‘escalations or reports of an incident of that nature’ in the region have been reported.
A local said: ‘What the hell was that loud bang/explosion just two mins ago?
‘Sounded like it came from Crosland moor. Shook my windows.
‘It’s not another electrical pylon going boom?’
Another resident said: ‘Apparently it was an electric junction box exploding. Big part of Golcar had lost power.’
‘Only thing that came to mind given how loud it was, was a Sonic Boom?’ a third said.
Locals said they heard the noise in Cowlersley Lane, where it shook people’s houses, and Milnsbridge.
Three properties in Meltham have been without power since 8am, according to the Northern Powergrid’s power cut map.
‘Our team have identified what’s caused the power cut and are working to get your power back on,’ the electricity company says of the ‘unplanned power cuts’.
Power should be restored by 7pm.
At around 11am, the company reported seven power outages in West Vale. The map no longer displays any known blackouts.
Northern Powergrid’s outage map says there are no known blackouts in Golcar, a village in Kirklees, at the time of writing.
West Yorkshire Police has been contacted for comment.
