Munich horror as 20 injured including kids and one dead after car rams crowd

A car has ploughed into a crowd of protestors in the city centre of Munich, injuring 28 including multiple children. There has also been unconfirmed reports of a female killed in the attack, as emergency services attend the scene.

A Mini Cooper is understood to have rammed the crowd at the Dachauer and Seidlstraße intersection in the Bavarian capital. Two men were in the car and one of them was shot before police took him away, according to local reports.

The woman reportedly killed was taking part in the protest organised by trade union Verdi, according to an announcement from the demonstration's stage. The police have released a statement, saying: "Around 20 injured people are currently being treated by rescue workers. We do not yet have any information about the severity of the injuries.

"That's why, among other things, rescue helicopters are in use. The driver was able to be secured on site and currently poses no further danger.

In an earlier statement, the police said: "At the scene of the incident, a vehicle drove into a group of people. Several people were injured. We have strong forces on site."

Protestors were "sitting on the ground, crying and shaking" in the aftermath of the terrifying ramming. A local journalist posted on X: "There was an incident in Munich at the Verdi rally. A car drove into the demonstration.

"A person was lying on the street and a young man was taken away by the police. People were sitting on the ground, crying and shaking. Details still unclear."

Mayor Dieter Reiter said in a statement: "The police chief has just informed me that a vehicle drove into a group of people and unfortunately many people were injured, including children. I am deeply shocked. My thoughts are with the injured.

"The police have arrested the driver of the vehicle, but the exact circumstances are currently unclear. I am of course still in close contact with the police chief and am on my way to get an idea of the situation on site."

The attack comes the day before the Munich Security Conference, a major political event which is set to host discussions between US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following Donald Trump's phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A child is believed to be among those injured in the attack, according to eye witnesses. The incident is the latest in a series of attacks where cars have been used as weapons against large crowds.

In December, a car rammed crowds at Magdeburg Christmas market killing 11 people and injuring at least 80. Last month, two people including a two-year-old child, were killed when a man went on a stabbing rampage in the Bavarian city of Aschaffenburg in Germany.
