Mufasa: The Lion King roared back at the box office after a somewhat sleepy start, and the film is still climbing at the box office. Directed by Barry Jenkins, Mufasa is a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King, itself a remake of the 1994 animated classic.
Ahead of the film’s eventual Disney+ release, Mufasa is getting a 4K UHD, standard Blu-Ray, and DVD release, dropping on April 1. The film will arrive on digital on Feb. 18 to rent or buy from platforms like Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV.
The film stars Aaron Pierre as Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, with Blue Ivy Carter making her voice acting debut as Kiara. The score was composed by Dave Metzger, while Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote original songs for the soundtrack.
Ahead of the film’s release, Disney shared a behind-the-scenes clip featuring director Barry Jenkins and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda exclusively with Rolling Stone. The clip will be included as part of the behind-the-scenes extras for the film’s digital and physical release. You can check it out below.
In the clip, Miranda discusses writing “I Always Wanted A Brother,” saying that the inspiration came from the script, which was “so clear.”
When Will Mufasa Be Streaming?
Disney has not yet announced a Disney+ date for Mufasa, but based on the timeline of previous Disney releases, fans can expect Mufasa to land on Disney+ in mid to late March or early April. The digital release will be available next Tuesday, and the Blu-Ray, including the 4K and Steelbook versions, are available to pre-order on Amazon now. Other retailers are likely soon to come.
Mufasa: The Lion King serves a sequel and prequel to 2019’s The Lion King. The original 1994 film was followed by two direct-to-video sequels, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998) and The Lion King 1½ (2004). Every entry in the franchise is streaming on Disney+, which is available as a standalone subscription or bundle with Max or ESPN.
