Moment Zelensky gets standing ovation in US after furious row with Donald Trump

New footage shows Volodymyr Zelensky being greeted with a standing ovation after his dramatic showdown with Donald Trump in the White House.

The Ukrainian leader admitted he and his nation face a “difficult time” as he shared the video online just hours before he lands in Britain for talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other European leaders. In the clip, Zelensky is roundly applauded as he arrives at a meeting with Ukrainians in the US capital shortly after his bruising bust-up with the US president in the Oval Office. One wounded fighter told him: “You represented our nation with dignity today, and me personally, my family, my guys on the front line.”

Zelensky assured him the territory to Russia would return, and said: “We will get it back.” A cleric told the Ukrainian leader: “The civilised world has supported you today. It shows that you are telling the truth. So keep on spreading the word of truth.”

Another woman praised him for securing the release of Ukrainian children kidnapped by Putin. “I thank you very much for defending Ukrainian children who were abducted from Ukraine and thrown into Russia today,” she said.

They were Ukrainian grandchildren and next generations, he told the crowd. “We will get it all back.” Zelensky told them: “We have preserved our independence, preserved our nation, our people.”

Another cleric told him: “And there is no turning back for you…” Later Zelensky posted: “It is very important for us that Ukraine is heard and that no one forgets about it, neither during the war nor after.

“It is important for people in Ukraine to know that they are not alone, that their interests are represented in every country, in every corner of the world. Thank you for your support in this difficult time, for all your efforts for the sake of Ukraine and Ukrainians and for your help - not only diplomatic and financial, but also political and prayerful.”

Gabrielius Landsbergis, the former foreign minister of Lithuania - which shares a border with Vladimir Putin ’s Russia - has warned that Europe now stands “alone” facing a “geopolitical horror movie” following the collapse in talks at the White House. He told Ukrainian TV: “We have to accept that we are now alone in this. Europe and Ukraine are alone against Putin. Trump needs a ‘quick peace’. Are agreements with Putin possible? Yes, Putin promises Trump everything he wants and gets what he wants.”
