Microsoft Outlook outage leaves millions locked out of accounts across the globe

According to Downdetector, people had problems accessing the server connection, website and app yesterday evening.

The outage also impacted Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Store.

The problems with Outlook were first reported around 8.30pm, peaked at 9pm, and have now been resolved.

Microsoft’s service health update status page currently says: ‘We’re all good! Everything is up and running.’

It comes after some customers also suffered outages last week, in what is thought to have been related to Virgin Media internet going down.

Microsoft said in a statement yesterday: ‘We’re investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services. Additional details can be found under MO1020913 in the admin center.

‘We’re reviewing available telemetry and customer provided logs to understand the impact.

‘We’ve confirmed this issue is impacting various Microsoft 365 services. Refer to MO1020913 for more detailed information.’

Microsoft confirmed that it had found a potential cause for the outage and was looking to alleviate the impact.

People were quick to vent their frustration about the outage on social media.

One person wrote: ‘So I’m guessing Microsoft Outlook is having issues, everyone around me has just been logged out of their emails.’

Somebody else commented: ‘I think Microsoft Outlook has gone down? Anyone else been signed out of Outlook or Hotmail?’

A third person sounded pretty desperate and wrote: ‘Hey. What’s going on with your software, no one can login to outlook and the error keeps saying too many attempts! What’s going on?’

A fourth even thought the worst had happened and added: ‘I thought I was getting my outlook hacked, turns out the entire Microsoft platform is getting hacked. Thank God it’s not personal.’
