Wolves star Matheus Cunha was sent off during their FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth after a moment of madness saw him hit Milos Kerkez before throwing a headbutt towards the Hungarian.
Some fans even claimed there was a small kick towards Kerkez as he fell to the ground in the crazy incident.
The chaotic moment happened in the dying minutes of stoppage time in extra time before the game went to penalties, meaning Wolves were without their main striker for the crucial shootout.
It rounded off a bizarre, topsy-turvy game for Cunha after he initially equalised for Wolves with a 40-yard piledriver in the 60th minute to take the game to extra time.
Fans on social media accused Cunha of "losing his head" as they were left baffled by his transition from hero to zero at the Vitality Stadium.
One Wolves fan wrote on Twitter: "That’s Wolves’ situation encapsulated in one evening. Cunha wonder goal and head loss. Considering he’d have no doubt taken a pen, he lost us that shootout with the red card. Unacceptable."
Another supporter said: "Scores a worldie then gets sent off for a headbutt, punch and a kick. Matheus Cunha is mental."
A third added: "Cunha, you are such a fantastic player but what on earth are you doing man?"
Cunha now faces the prospect of a four-game ban having already been given a two-match suspension for snatching the glasses of an Ipswich security guard in December.
That ban itself was reduced from three matches by the FA after Cunha apologised and offered to buy the man in question new glasses, though he is unlikely to face the same leniency on this occasion.
His absence will be a huge blow to manager Vitor Pereira, who was counting on Cunha's quality to help Wolves ward off the threat of relegation. They are currently five points ahead of 17th-placed Ipswich.
