Mateta update as Crystal Palace striker discharged from hospital

Jean-Philippe Mateta has been discharged from hospital, Crystal Palace have confirmed.

Crystal Palace's 3-1 win over Millwall to book a place in the FA Cup quarter-final was overshadowed by Mateta receiving eight minutes of treatment on the pitch before he was stretchered off early in the match after being kicked in the face by goalkeeper Liam Roberts.

Roberts was shown a red card by referee Michael Oliver after a VAR review.

Palace chairman Steve Parish described it as “the most reckless challenge” he had ever seen and confirmed that Mateta had been taken to hospital.

In an update, Palace have revealed the striker required 25 stitches to a severe laceration to his left ear.

A statement reads: “We are very pleased to confirm that JP Mateta has this evening been discharged from St George’s Hospital where he received specialist treatment and 25 stitches to a severe laceration to his left ear.

“All scans were clear and JP is feeling well.

“He will now rest and recuperate over the following days where his progress will be monitored by our club doctor.

“Thank you to the medical staff at both Selhurst Park and the hospital for their help and professionalism, and for all the wishes of support that JP and the club have received today.”

Mateta took to social media earlier in the day to send a message to the Crystal Palace fans.

“Thank you all for your kind messages,” he posted.

“I'm doing well. I hope to be back very soon. And stronger than ever. Well done guys for the great job today. I love you. JP.”
