Marcus Rashford and Rio Ferdinand lead the birthday messages to Fergie

Marcus Rashford and Rio Ferdinand were among the first to publicly wish Sir Alex Ferguson happy birthday as Manchester United's legendary manager celebrated reaching the age of 80.

United fans unveiled a banner in the Old Trafford stands during their 3-1 win over Burnley on Thursday night to celebrate their former boss's milestone.

And on the big day, United striker Rashford and former Red Devils defender Ferdinand were quick to send their birthday wishes.

'Happy 80th birthday to the greatest,' Rashford wrote on his Twitter profile.

'So proud to have been able to share memories with you over the last couple of years. You’re an icon, a hero, and everything I aspire to be. Enjoy your day SAF.'

Ferdinand accompanied his message by mocking up a picture of Ferguson with a crown and beard to resemble a king - complete with a party horn.

His post read: 'Happy 80th birthday boss. The creator of a machine that enabled people to learn & become Winners.'

United star Cristiano Ronaldo also wished his former manager happy birthday by posting a picture of the pair together alongside his wishes on his Instagram story.

David Beckham also sent a message to his old boss on his 80th birthday, writing on Instagram: 'Happy 80th birthday Boss… A man who has meant so much to me since I was a young boy and also gave me the opportunity to play for the club that I always dreamt of playing for. THANK YOU… Have the best day with Cathy and the family, Boss.'

While former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar posted: 'Happy birthday Boss, thanks for the opportunity you gave me at 34 years of age.

'Hard work and dedication always pays off you said often and that's what we did as a team for you! Enjoy the day, all the best for the New Year.'

The banner unfurled at Old Trafford on Thursday was also accompanied by chanting and singing directed at the Scotsman.

The Manchester United fans have nothing but admiration for Ferguson. Under his tenure, United became England's most successful club - winning 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles.

Ferguson was also the manager who first brought Ronaldo to the club and helped him on his path to stardom.

After 27 years at the helm at the Premier League giants he retired in 2013 and the club have failed to replicate his success, not even coming close to the title since.

The red birthday sign read: 'Happy 80th Sir Alex' and featured a picture of the Scottish manager.

The Amazon Prime Video cameras captured Ferguson's reaction with the club legend beaming from ear to ear.
