Andre Onana and Patrick Dorgu’s complete lack of communication saw Manchester United gift Ipswich Town an opening goal.
United entered the match 13 points ahead of Ipswich Town. Fans worryingly joked before the game that defeat could genuinely see the Red Devils in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.
And those fears were no longer a joke after Ipswich took the lead just four minutes in when Jaden Philogene was left with an open goal following a mix-up between Onana and Dorgu.
The under-fire United keeper came rushing off his line to claim a ball that was bouncing towards his box. Miscommunication saw Dorgu appear to think Onana was still on his line, seeing him knock the ball past his keeper, inadvertently playing in Philogene in front of an open net.
Fans took to social media to slam Onana for more careless keeping, with one user saying: “Today is the day I’ve fully given up on Onana. GET RID!!!!!” A second said: “ONANA IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE FROM THIS TEAM F***ING DROP HIM RUBEN.” While a third simply called the defending “abysmal”.
Dorgu was United’s only senior January transfer window incoming, as Ruben Amorim made his first foray in the market to sign a player seen as specialised in his 3-4-2-1 system. The 20-year-old left-wing-back joined from Serie A side Lecce in a £25million deal.
The Italian’s evening was then compounded after he was sent off following a VAR check for a dangerous tackle on Omari Hutchinson, which luckily saw the Ipswich winger avoid serious injury.
After going behind, United did react positively as Old Trafford got behind their struggling team. And almost 20 minutes after they humiliatingly trailed, Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick was turned into his own net by Sam Morsy to level the scores.
United then swiftly completed the turnaround as Matthijs de Ligt stabbed home to give United a 2-1 lead following a scramble after Ipswich failed to clear Fernandes’ corner.
However, smiles were soon wiped from United fans’ faces as Philogene scored a second as both teams headed into half-time at 2-2. Philogene’s cross from the right went through everyone and into Onana’s bottom corner, not covering the Cameroonian in glory again.
United did get back ahead just two minutes into the second half when Harry Maguire powered home a header from a corner. It proved to be the last goal of the game as United held onto a nervous 3-2 win.
