A doting boyfriend has been labelled 'selfish and unwelcoming' by his girlfriend after telling her he would no longer foot the bill for her friends on a night out.
The anonymous man, 24, started a Reddit thread to talk about his girlfriend's friends, a group of five women, who often invite themselves to date nights or suggest big nights out.
When it comes to paying the bill at the end of the night the group all look to him, a habit which costs him hundreds of dollars every week.
'I'd had it, I told "Bridget", that moving forward I will only be paying for myself and her, and whatever these friends order, that's on them,' he explained.
However the conversation with his partner of three years didn't go the way he expected it to.
'She feels as though I'm being unwelcoming to her friends and worries that if she tells them that their food and drinks is on them, that they'll resent her for it,' he said.
The frustrated man said he would be happy to pay for the group if the outings were less frequent or if they didn't have expensive taste.
'God forbid they have some restraint, not order the pricey food along with drinks. Do they order something simple, no, they all order $14 wine. Last Monday, don't ask why because it's non-sensical, the dinner bill was $667,' he complained.
The man owns a home and is more than happy to pay for his partner but that's where the bankrolling ends.
'I think I've been generous over the years, not that I'm complaining about paying for her because I know that's par for the course,' he said.
But the users commenting on the online thread appeared to be firmly on his side - insisting he get rid of his girlfriend and her friends.
'You're the group's sugar daddy, I am sorry but she is just using you,' one man said.
'If her friends resent her because her boyfriend no longer buys them everything, they are sh*tty people. If she cares about that more than she cares about your feelings, well that might be worth re-evaluating the relationship.
But the man insisted his relationship was solid gold aside from her friend's expensive habits.
'This only started happening once we moved in together,' he said.
Others said he was being naïve.
'You mean it began right after it became much harder to break up? Almost as though she wanted you trapped?' One person asked.
Some warned the man to be careful of being 'baby trapped' by the woman.
But he said he is confident she would pay his way if he were to lose his job because she has been saving for a rainy day.
'She is saving so she can ditch you when you are no longer convenient - please be careful,' one woman said.
Some warned that breaking off her financial benefits could lead to the breakdown of their relationship.
'Just be warned she could walk away if she feel you pulling away, but it could be worth considering re-evaluating your relationship anyway.'
