Major football game postponed after damage caused by Storm Eowyn

Celtic and Dundee's Scottish Premiership clash has been postponed due to damage caused by Storm Eowyn to Celtic Park.

Friday saw the UK buffeted by the 'Storm of the Century' with strong winds of up to 100mph recorded. And footage on social media showed just how Glasgow's two football teams, Celtic and Rangers, saw their respective stadiums impacted by the storm.

Footage on social media shows parts of the roof of Ibrox being blown off, whilst at Celtic Park, they saw their stadium sustain damage to both its interior and exterior. And as a result, Celtic's game against Dundee, which was set to take place this afternoon (Saturday 25th January), has been postponed.

A statement from the club read: "Today’s scheduled Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Dundee at Celtic Park has been called off. Unfortunately, due to the stadium damage sustained yesterday we have been advised that we are unable to proceed with today's match.

"While clearly this is disappointing, the safety of our supporters will always be our priority. The rearranged fixture will take place on February 5, 2025 with a 7.45pm kick-off."

Following a pitch inspection earlier on Saturday morning, Hibernian's game against Ross County at Easter Road will go ahead.

Meanwhile, across the city, Rangers will take on Dundee United at Tannadice. However, Storm Eowyn hit Glasgow hard during the red weather warning, which led to Rangers boss Philippe Clement having to cancel training on Friday, a day after their late defeat to Manchester United in the Europa League.

Speaking ahead of the clash against Dundee United, Clement said: "We cannot say anything about the players who came off at this time. On Friday we had plans to come back to train, but with the storm it was too dangerous. There were a few cars smashed on the road here.

"It was not possible to bring players to the hospital for scans, and we hope to do that today."

He added: "It's disruptive [the storm], but we have to adapt. It is what it is. You can only control the things you can control yourself. This was out of control for everybody, and we need to adapt. I need to make decisions later today and tomorrow."
