Lewis Hamilton forgot he had invested in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new golf competition.
Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) is the brainchild of golf legends Woods and McIlroy, who founded the innovative competition with former NBC Sports executive Mike McCarley. It is an indoor three-on-three league with six teams.
PGA Tour players participate in two-hour matches inside SoFi Center, TGL's custom-built venue in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Every shot is live while each player is mic’d up.
The league, which is played on a football-pitch-sized playing area, uses advanced technology, including a shot clock and an overtime period. The tournament, aimed at bringing younger fans into the sport, has been a success.
However, it seems to have passed Hamilton by, despite the fact that he pumped some of his vast wealth into the venture when it was first conceived in 2022. Along with fellow F1 stars and golf fans Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, and Alex Albon, Hamilton is one of TGL’s investors.
During an interview with Time Magazine, Hamilton was asked if he had been watching the first iteration of TGL. The 40-year-old said he hadn’t. Pressed on whether he had invested in the project, he couldn't quite remember as he replied: “I might have.”
Given his F1 commitments with new team Ferrari, plus his numerous other business interests, it is perhaps understandable that the 40-year-old’s memory is hazy. Hamilton has also invested in the Denver Broncos, a pet-food company and a plant-based burger chain with Leonardo DiCaprio. He also has financial interests in worlds of fashion, music and art.
The same interview made reference to former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan’s claim that it was “absolutely suicidal” for Ferrari to replace Sainz with Hamilton. The seven-time world champion said: “I’ve always welcomed the negativity.
“I never, ever reply to any of the older, ultimately, white men who have commented on my career and what they think I should be doing. How you show up, how you present yourself, how you perform slowly dispels that.”
