'Kyle Walker has nothing left to achieve at Man City – he owes the club nothing'

Plymouth knocking Brentford out of the FA Cup. Or non-league Tamworth taking top flight Tottenham to extra time.

Even 10-man Manchester United's shoot-out win at Arsenal wasn't the biggest shock of the weekend. This accolade belonged to Pep Guardiola, who revealed Kyle Walker has asked if he can leave Manchester City.

There has been talk of him going to Saudi to cash-in on a mind boggling pay day before the end of his career. Or moving to Milan to join either AC or Inter.

But wherever Walker ends up, no-one at the Etihad should begrudge him wanting to seek pastures new. Some might find it astonishing the captain of the most dominant team of the last decade, managed by the best boss in the business, wants to turn his back on Manchester.

And the scenario is not a good look for the reigning English champions, it has to be said. But there is nothing left for him to achieve at City - and he owes the club nothing.

Walker has been one of the mainstays of City's success since joining them from Tottenham in 2017, winning 17 major trophies. That's not a bad return on someone who cost them an initial £45m at the time.

OK, so Walker might like to break the rules from time to time, while his private life resembles a soap opera that a combined edition of Coronation Street and Emmerdale would be proud of.

But on the pitch, Walker has rarely let down his club, manager or supporters. And he should be able to leave with everyone's blessing, because he's earned that privilege.
