Killer farmer Tony Martin who shot teen trespasser dies at age 80

Convicted farmer Tony Martin who was put behind bars after killing a teen house intruder has died age 80.

A family friend has confirmed the death of Martin. He shot 16-year-old boy Fred Barras after he entered the Norfolk farmhouse back in 1999.

Martin was convicted a year later for the killing and was also jailed for injuring Brendan Fearon,29, during the same incident.

It is believed that the farmer was panicked when he spotted the pair on his property, which caused him to shoot at the burglars.

The owner of the secluded farmhouse said, in defence of his actions, that he fired a warning shot to alert to the pair.

Martin spent three years behind bars before his murder conviction was reduced to manslaughter and was then released.

Since the events of the fateful night, the farmer maintained his innocence until his recent passing - he had hoped that his name would be cleared one day.

The nation became divided over the case, with some believing in his innocence and others felt that he lacked 'remorse' for killing the boy.

Speaking to the BBC in 2019, 20 years after the incident, Martin shared: "I've always said when people get into exceptional circumstances which are beyond the norm, the law should leave you alone.

"You should be protected in law against these things."
