‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ leads this year's Razzie Awards nominations

The Academy Awards are gearing up to announce their nominations tomorrow, honouring the crème de la crème. And that also means that the worst must get a look-in.

Enter satirical awards organization Razzie Awards, which shines a dull light on the “worst” movies of the year.

While they can be taken in jest, the awards aren’t to be taken seriously. It’s worth remembering that this is the organisation who loves to punch down and previously nominated Stanley Kubrick as Worst Director for The Shining and deemed that Ennio Morricone's score for The Thing was rubbish.

Yep, credibility isn’t their main register.

That said, their flop picks for the 2025 awards are on point.

Joker: Folie a Deux leads this year's nominations - five years after the first film led the noms for the Oscars with 11 nods. How things change... The sequel to the Oscar-winning film is up for seven prizes including Worst Film, with Phoenix and his co-star Lady Gaga also nominated in the acting categories.

In our review, we said: "Underwhelming and monotonous, Joker: Folie À Deux may not give the people what they want, but it certainly doesn’t offer anything interesting instead. While Joker was controversial because a narrative was pushed that the film would lead to incel violence, Joker: Folie À Deux will be controversial only because it’s a yawn-inducing folly not worth entertaining." Close behind is Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed disaster Megalopolis with six nominations.

Considered one of the biggest flops - commercially and critically - of 2024, the Cannes-debuting film was an ambitious dud. In our review, we said: "Think Cloud Atlas by way of Southland Tales. And even that sounds better than Megalopolis actually is. (...) While this futurist fantasy sounds so insane it could border on genius, don’t delude yourselves into thinking that Megalopolis is one of those ahead-of-its-time / bless-this-mess future classics made by a filmmaker with nothing left to lose. Just because the veteran director behind such classics as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and The Conversation decides to deliver his go-for-broke magnum opus, doesn’t make it any less of an indulgent folly that borders on nonsensical." Check out the full review here.

Also up for Worst Film are Borderlands, starring Oscar winner Cate Blanchett; the critically panned Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web; and Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid as the former president.

Other actors nominated for what the Razzies describes as "less-than-stellar star turns in 2024" include Kevin Hart (Borderlands), Jennifer Lopez (Atlas) and Jon Voight.

The latter is worth singling out. Not only is he one of Donald Trump’s newly appointed “ambassadors to Hollywood” but also he’s nominated for not one but FOUR movies. They are: Megalopolis, Reagan, Shadow Land and Strangers.

This year’s Razzie winners will be unveiled on Saturday 1 March, with the Oscars ceremony taking place the following evening.

Here are this year’s nominees:

Worst Picture Worst Director Worst Actor Worst Actress Worst Supporting Actor Worst Supporting Actress Worst Screen Combo Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel Worst Screenplay
