Jersey police trialling AI to transcribe witness interviews

Artificial intelligence is being tested within the police to help transcribe witness interviews, States of Jersey Police has confirmed.

The development of AI within the force was confirmed by deputy chief officer Scott Hall during a Children, Education and Home Affairs scrutiny hearing.

Mr Hall told the scrutiny panel the technology was currently in trials and being developed in line with ethical guidelines.

He said the trials were "working really well and it's had some significant dividends".

"We are developing internally in line with national best practice in the UK, the ethical guidelines in where and how it should be deployed and the safeguards that go around that," Mr Hall added.

"It learns, so it can be educated with a glossary if you like, of terms.

"We absolutely recognise the importance of that ethical and governance framework that sits over the top of that and we're aligning to best practice in the UK."
