William A. Sirignano, of Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, is the new dean of the UC Irvine School of Engineering, Chancellor Jack Peltason announced Wednesday.
In brief remarks after the announcement, Sirignano said he thinks the School of Engineering must expand to meet the high demand, both for industries seeking its graduates and students seeking admission.
“We must have growth, but it must be planned growth,” he said.
One possible field of expansion, Sirignano said, is a proposed program of biochemical engineering. A university subcommittee is now studying the feasibility of such a program, he said.
Sirignano, who is on a National Aeronautics and Space Administration advisory committee on science application in space, is a specialist in combustion systems. His scholarly research has included the fields of rocket propulsion.
Sirignano has served as a United Aircraft Research Fellow and has written more than 170 publications. He earned his doctorate from Princeton University in 1964 and was a faculty member there until 1979, when he joined Carnegie-Mellon. There, he was head of the department of mechanical engineering.
