British rockstar Sam Fender is never too far away from making headlines. The 30-year-old blue collar solo rock icon is the UK’s version of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp and Bob Seger.
A true blue British native, Sam is a singer-songwriter who grew up in North Shields, just outside Newcastle. But most importantly – he talks (sings) about things that matter. Frequently giving masterclasses in issues that are pertinent for the working class through his art, the Geordie rocker has become a celebrated musician in the UK over the last few years.
While the singer’s music is always in the spotlight – his dating life has never been too far behind.
Aged only 15, Sam faced his first heartbreak and subsequent burst of musical inspiration. In a 2022 interview with GQ, the rocker explained how he was “completely smitten” when he was only 15: “We were in a big group of mates. We did everything together.”
He and his childhood love only dated for around six months, however he thought it “felt like years”. Alas, their young love was not meant to be. Sam shared: “She dumped me and started going out with my best mate days after.” Calling his heartbreak “brutal and embarrassing,” it did however lead Sam to form his first band, and the music world is all the richer for his teenage angst.
Speaking to the Guardian about said relationship, Sam reflected: “I realised I couldn’t surrender myself to people.” The singer-songwriter explained how he “didn’t feel safe in a loving relationship”, and that he’d resort to self-sabotage as a means to regain control.
Sam did feel that some good came out of his childhood heartbreak though, as he shared: “The fact that I’m an empathetic little softie is probably the best thing about me.” What came next were a string of publicised link-ups for the young Briton.
In 2022, Sam was linked to fellow BRIT Award winner and musician Raye, after the two were spotted kissing post the BRIT awards in London that February. The musical pair also turned heads at an afterparty hosted by Sam. The private bash was held at hipster joint Four Quarters, in Peckham, South London, and all of Sam’s mates were in attendance.
The duo allegedly went on a ‘string of dates’ following Sam’s BRIT Awards afterparty. A source told The Sun at the time: “Sam and Raye met each other on the music scene and get on really well. It’s very early days but they’ve spent a lot of time together over the past few weeks and have been on a string of low-key, secret dates. They really respect each other and have loads in common.”
In current news, life seems to have put the ex-flames on the same path once again, with the one-time lovebirds all set to headline the 2025 F1 British Grand Prix that’s taking place this year from 3 to 6 July at Silverstone, Northamptonshire.
Sam was later connected to model Lottie Moss following their encounter at the NME awards in London. Eagle-eyed fans spotted Sam hitting the 'like' button on a series of racy Instagram posts from Lottie, Kate Moss's younger half-sister, who's also made waves on OnlyFans. The feeling seemed mutual as Lottie returned the favour, sparking rumours that the pair might be getting cosy.
But before anyone could get too carried away, Sam's name was soon connected with Norwegian songstress Sigrid, and shortly after, whispers began linking him to Netflix's breakout sensation Hannah Dodd.
Rumours began swirling that Sam was dating British actress Hannah Dodd – best known for her role as Francesca Bridgerton in the Netflix hit. Hannah, also known for her roles in Anatomy of a Scandal, Marvel's Eternals and Enola Holmes 2, was said to be on the receiving end of Sam’s social media affection, with the rocker reportedly having 'slid into the DMs' of the popular British actress.
A friend of Sam told The Sun: "Sam thinks Hannah is absolutely stunning and has been liking her pictures like crazy, which is of course very flattering for her. She has also followed him back and they are getting on very well. It's a case of ‘watch this space’."
In the past, Sam has been candid about his colourful dating life, revealing how personal insecurities have sabotaged his relationships. Speaking about his 2021 single Get You Down, he confessed: "The whole record is about growing up and the self-esteem issues that you carry into your adult life." He elaborated on the track's deeper meaning, saying: "This song in particular is about how insecurity has affected my relationships. Definitely one of the more personal ones."
