A three-year-old girl has tragically died after being struck by a vehicle following a collision involving a city centre tram. Police are currently on the scene on Mosley Street, where a Metrolink tram and a white Mercedes-Benz van were involved in an accident earlier today (February 22).
A cordon is now in place on Mosley Street and all trams through St Peter's Square have been halted. It is understood that the child was walking on Mosley Street when she was hit by the van as it rebounded from its crash with the tram.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police stated: "Emergency services are responding to reports of a collision involving a tram and a van in Manchester city centre.
"A three-year-old girl was taken to hospital and has sadly passed away from her injuries.
"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing," reports the Manchester Evening News.
Photos from the scene show the tram, which was en route from Victoria to Manchester Airport, heading towards St Peter's Square at the time of the incident. The van appears to have mounted the pavement on Mosley Street.
Police and Metrolink workers have been present at the scene since this morning. At least four detectives have been spotted at the site while officers have been speaking to local businesses about the incident.
Transport for Greater Manchester has warned of severe delays across the Metrolink network, with no trams operating through St Peter's Square.
Metrolink tickets are now valid on city centre buses and select Northern trains, while a number of trams are being rerouted via Exchange Square.
