The now viral one day ‘economic blackout’ was organised by The People’s Union USA, a grassroots movement which focuses on government accountability and corporate reform.
Shoppers have been urged not to spend a penny today in person or online in a bid to send a message to big corporations.
A variety of businesses have been listed as ones to avoid, after many announced they would halt their DEI initiatives after Donald Trump said he would end them as well.
In January, the President signed an executive order saying he would terminate ‘radical DEI preferencing’, calling it the most important civil rights measure in ‘decades’.
Other businesses followed suit – Target, Amazon, Walmart, and others said they would make similar decisions.
On their website, The People’s Union USA wrote: ‘Do not make any purchases. Do not shop online, or in-store. No Amazon, No Walmart, No Best Buy. Nowhere!’
They added that Americans shouldn’t spend money on fast food, gas, or use debit and credit cards for non-essential spending.
Boycotters have been encouraged to buy from small, local businesses only, and post about their boycott to spread the word.
Trump has labeled DEI programs ‘discrimination’. His orders are eliminating diversity programs in the federal government and have pressured private companies to ditch DEI for merit-based hiring.
Throughout his election campaign, Trump has made sweeping promises about ‘woke’ culture, gender, and diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) programmes.
Another directive that he revoked had been designed to address ‘racial equity and support for underserved communities’.
A Trump administration official said his executive orders would ‘end DEI inside the federal government’.
Several large US companies ended or scaled back their DEI programmes since Trump was elected, including McDonald’s, Walmart and Facebook parent company Meta – all of which are being targeted in the boycott.
