As the Donald J. Trump gets settled into office and launches groundbreaking offensives both in the domestic and foreign policies, one of the main priorities continues to be border security.
This is one of the areas in which the administration is showing great early success, severely curbing illegal crossings, down from 300,000 illegal apprehension under Joe Biden, to just 8,326 in February – the lowest number in US history.
But that does not mean Trump’s team is resting on its laurels – not at all.
On Sunday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered an additional 2,500 to 3,000 active-duty troops to the southern U.S. border.
The troops reportedly deployed include a motorized brigade equipped with Stryker combat vehicles.
The Washington Post reported:
As the troops arrive in the coming weeks, the Defense Department’s keeps working alongside the Department of Homeland Security to ‘secure the southern border and maintain the sovereignty, territory integrity, and security of the United States’.
Thousand U.S. troops are already assisting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to detect and apprehend migrants seeking to enter the United States illegally.
The armored Stryker vehicles have seen combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, but it’s unclear on Saturday if the vehicles will be mounted with machine guns and/or grenade launchers during the deployment.
“The Strykers likely will be transported to the border by rail and truck, after earlier discussions included the possibility of a road march from Fort Carson, one of the officials said. Army officials see it as useful for the soldiers to continue training with the vehicles while deployed to the border. The vehicles will be sent to Arizona and also could appear in other states, the official said.”
