Erling Haaland has been blasted on social media for a “tone deaf” post in which he claimed people are too lazy to get in a sauna.
The Manchester City striker, who earns a cool £865,000 per week, shared a story of himself staring down a lens and working up a sweat with the caption: “Have you been in the sauna today? If not whats your excuse? Deep down too lazy?”
But some of his 38.3m followers have taken offence to the post by pointing out that not only are saunas expensive but the majority of people have too many commitments in life to partake in effectively a leisure pursuit.
One unhappy fan wrote on X: ”Such an arrogant and tone deaf tweet. Not everyone's earning a million a week.”
“Yeah most people don't have £3-5k to casually throw at getting a sauna. And we were acting like Mbappe was a snob... couldn't be more wrong,” another added.
Among the other posts, one wrote: “Maybe we are not a guy whose life is £500k per week for running after a ball and relax in my private sauna for the whole day doing nothing.”
A sauna can cost between £5,000 to £10,000 to install at home - regardless of the space requirements.
Haaland could face Championship side Plymouth Argyle in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening having recovered from injury to score against Tottenham in midweek - although Pep Guardiola may choose to give January signing Omar Marmoush another opportunity to lead the line.
Discussing his injury, Haaland said: “I feel good - it's good to be back. It's been a horrible week. It's good to win and I'm happy. As a footballer, all you want to do is play but sometimes you have to listen to your body.”
Speaking to BBC Sport, he added: "Of course it’s never nice to be injured and not play but it’s about looking forward and staying positive. We can only do things about the present and future, today was all about winning."
