Energy expert urges Brits to swap common item in their freezers to save on bill

With Brits set to pay more energy bills from April, an expert has suggested swapping one common item from the freezer, which may help reduce some energy bills.

Energy regulator Ofgem recently said the cap on gas and electricity charges would rise by £111 from April to an average of £1,849 a year for a typical household after a surge in energy market prices.

The 6.4 percent rise from April means households will pay about £600 a year more for gas and electricity.

In such a scenario, an expert from Beko UK has come up with some crucial advice for the household owners.

Salah Sun, head of product management at Beko UK, has urged consumers to choose glass containers over plastic in their freezers.

He said: “Using glass containers instead of plastic can improve temperature control, while avoiding overfilling your fridge allows better air circulation for optimal cooling.

“Using glass containers rather than plastic ones helps maintain stable temperatures, as glass better absorbs and retains cold.”

In simple terms, glass retains cold temperatures better than plastic, which means your freezer doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain low temperatures, leading to potential energy savings.

According to the experts, additionally, glass containers are more durable, free from harmful chemicals like BPA, and better at preventing freezer burn.

If you are considering making the switch, ensure you use tempered or freezer-safe glass to avoid breakage due to temperature changes.

As per the estimates, from April, the cap on electricity prices will rise from 25p a kilowatt hour to 27p, while the standing charge will fall from 61p to 54p. Gas will increase from 6.34p a kilowatt hour to 6.99p, and the standing charge will rise from 31.65p to 32.67p.
