James Lee Williams who was better known as The Vivienne has died, according to their management. Simon Jones, The Vivienne’s PR Manager, announced the news on social media today, January 5.

Williams, who became famous on RuPaul's drag race, was given their name of The Vivienne because they were known for wearing Vivienne Westwood clothing.

He wrote: “It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend. James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career.

“We will not be releasing any further details.”

Michelle Visage commented on the Instagram post: "I don't have the words. Utterly heartbroken." Presenter Harriet Rose added: "Oh Simon I'm so sorry for your loss. That is absolutely heartbreaking."

A statement from Ru Paul's Drag Race reads: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of The Vivienne. Her talent, humor, and dedication to the art of drag was an inspiration. She will be dearly missed, but her legacy will live on as a beacon of creativity and authenticity – she embodied what it means to be a true champion. Our hearts go out to her family and fans during this difficult time."

Pussycat Dolls singer Ashley Roberts added: "Omg! I can't believe this. This is heartbreaking news," alongside a broken heart emoji.

The Vivienne initially rose to fame in 2015 as the UK Drag Ambassador for the American series of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

They later competed and won the first UK series of the reality show in 2019 and competed again in the seventh series, which was an All-Stars edition in 2022.

Williams showcased their incredible musical talents via their debut EP, B**ch on Heels (2022).

They went on to appear in the critically acclaimed, award-winning medical drama This is Going to Hurt, based on Adam Kay’s memoir of the same name. They were the first drag performer to compete on Dancing on Ice in 2023, finishing in third place.

The Vivienne was on our screens over the Christmas period as a guest on the BBC’s Blankety Blank Christmas special.
