Dorset: Commemorative coin collection fetches £4,000 at auction

A large number of commemorative coins, including Lord of the Rings, London 2012 Olympic Games and Queen Elizabeth II sets, has been sold at auction.

The privately-owned collection from Horsham, West Sussex, fetched just over £4,000 in the sale at Charterhouse Auctioneers, Dorset, on Thursday.

The collection, which had been expected to sell for £3,000, included a variety of silver and cupro-nickel coins.

Auctioneer Richard Bromell described coins as "a wonderful thing to accumulate".

He said: "Everyone collects something - it might not be commemorative coins, but most people have a passion for something.

"We are all custodians of our collection, which we enjoy for as long as we can before passing it on."
