President Donald Trump has officially had his first phone call with Vladimir Putin since taking up his position – and has agreed to a meeting in person with the Russian leader.
The Russian president will welcome Trump at Moscow in an attempt to put an end to "millions of deaths." They are expected to start negotiations which could end the war between Russia and Ukraine, which started at the beginning of 2022 when Russian troops entered into Ukrainian territory.
Following the call, Trump shared an update about the conversation. He told Americans that a new time of peace could be achieved.
"We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations. We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now," he shared.
Trump also said the pair discussed “Ukraine, the Middle East, Energy, Artificial Intelligence, the power of the Dollar, and various other subjects.”
News from the Oval Office suggests they “agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations." Trump's international negotiations did not stop there, however, as he said he will now call Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky to “to inform him of the conversation,” he told the public.
Apparently, Putin seemed certain that "peaceful negotiations" on ending the war could take place. “President Putin ... agreed with Trump that a long-term settlement could be reached through peaceful negotiations,” the Kremlin said in its readout of the call.
The call, which lasted around an hour and a half, was immediately followed with an update to Ukraine's president.
Negotiations will start immediately, according to the President, who is apparently keen to bring peace back to Eastern Europe. “We will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
A date for the US official visit has not yet been set, but Trump reassures that he has been invited to work on international relations.
