Sascha Bailey is looking forward to welcoming his first child with girlfriend Lucy Brown.
The son of hugely successful photographer David Bailey and his fourth wife and model Catherine Deneuve, Sascha opened up about his hopes for the future and troubled past. The now 30-year-old art curator revealed that just a few years ago he'd been reeling from his "toxic" marriage, which had led him to consider a sex change.
The soon-to-be dad has since been candid about the emotional and mental struggles that led him to contemplate this life-altering decision.
Feeling deeply unhappy with his life and his identity, Bailey saw the idea of transitioning as a way to escape his pain. He explained that it felt like "killing myself without dying", reflecting on how trapped and desperate he felt at the time.
"It was a way of killing myself without dying, because I was so unhappy with my life," he told The Daily Mail. But looking back, Sascha is thankful he hadn't gone through with his plan.
He admitted: "Thank God I didn't. I actually always wanted to be a father but, at one point, it felt like there weren't many options left for me. He added: "So to have left the marriage and permanently taken away that future option when I was so young as well..."
Sascha went on to confess that he was left in disbelief after his girlfriend Lucy, 34, revealed to him that she was pregnant just before Christmas. He shared that the pair had an "emotional" and tearful moment during that special time.
The news comes after he had faced heavy backlash for speaking out against the rush to medically transition people, especially children who are still unsure about their identity. However, the star was careful in how he approached the topic, revealing his personal experience to offer another perspective on why the idea of becoming "someone new" might be so tempting to someone vulnerable.
Despite this, the artist had been trolled online and faced personal struggles because of his views. He opened up about it last year, saying: "It's almost like society has a gun to its head. You are either for it or you're transphobic; there's no middle ground."
He told the newspaper: "I saw some old friends recently and, without asking me how I am, they jumped to the issues of the trans community."
"I'm the bad guy. Why? At no point did I say that anyone should be stopped from doing something that is right for them – the end goal is for everyone to be happy. It was just sounding caution. The only really hardline opinion I have is about prescribing hormones to kids, which I think is completely inappropriate and makes no sense to anyone who thinks about it for more than a second."
Speaking about his future plans, Bailey opened up about his dream of starting his own tech business and proposing to his girlfriend Lucy. He admitted the couple has received huge support after sharing their pregnancy news with friends and family.
