Darts star struck by his own arrow after freak rebound incident

German darts star Martin Schindler was the victim of a freak incident during the UK Open on Saturday when his own arrow rebounded off the board and landed in his foot.

Schindler beat Dylan Slevin in Monday's afternoon session, setting up a meeting with Jonny Clayton in the round of 16. As he was throwing some practice darts, though, he was caught out by his own throw.

A freak bounce saw the dart come all the way back, sticking in the 28-year-old's foot. As he bent down to pick it up, Schindler's reaction appeared to be one of surprise more than pain, and he signalled that he was unhurt.

In a clip shared by ITV sport, Clayton can be shown in the background as he realises what his opponent has done. The Welshman isn't able to hide his laughter while watching Schindler recover.

When it came to the match itself, it was Clayton who came out on top. The 50-year-old averaged 98.04 on his way to a 10-4 victory, and will take on Michael Smith in the quarter-finals

"Into the quarters!" Clayton wrote on social media after his win on Saturday. "Chuffed to make finals day at the UK Open, and to be in the draw for the quarter finals. See you all tomorrow!"

Smith also recorded a comfortable win to progress, winning 10-3 against Dimitri Van Den Bergh. It was the second biggest margin of victory in the round of 16, with only Luke Humphries - a 10-2 victor over Ryan Joyce - winning by more.

World number one Humphries will face James Wade in the next round. Wade secured a 10-8 win over Rob Owen in the round of 16, with Welshman Owen unable to build on his shock win over Michael van Gerwen.

Impressively, Humphries was able to predict his opponent before the draw for the quarters even took place. "It'll probably be James Wade, because I always seem to get the same player all the time [in the UK Open]," Humphries told sponsors Ladbrokes.

"I've played Ryan Joyce in three out of four years, I always draw Ryan Searle... I knew I was going to be the only one to draw Beau [Greaves] on Friday, so it's going to be James Wade. It's not the draw I want, but it's the draw I know is going to happen."

Along with Clayton vs Smith and Humphries vs Wade, the remaining quarter-finals will see Nathan Aspinall take on Josh Rock and Luke Littler face Gian van Veen- who posted the highest average in the round of 16. The quarters will take place from 12.45 in Minehead, with the semis and final scheduled for Sunday evening.
